2019 New York City Marathon – Week 12

A planned recovery week turned into a complete taper after I felt light-headed during Sunday’s back-to-back long run. I took the next three days easy – eating, hydrating, and sleeping well – because my body needed rest more than workouts.

2019 New York City Marathon – Week 11

I entered a tricky stage in my training where I should start tapering for the New York City Marathon, but I still need to maintain high mileage for the Brazos Bend 50 Miler.  This week, the ultra-marathon won and I skipped my mid-week speed workout in favor of a medium run.

2019 New York City Marathon – Week 10

Fully recovered from the cold I had after 2019 Ragnar Sunset Washington DC, I resumed the race preparation phase of my training. On Sunday, I ran a trail 10 miler as the second long-run of my weekend. Mid-week fatigue led me to push my marathon pace workout to Thursday, which meant there was only one easy day before my 22 miler.

2019 EX2 Adventures Fall Backyard Burn 10 Mile Race #1: Lake Fairfax

After last Sunday’s near medical emergency, I was afraid to run the week after.  With my body and mind still reeling from that scare, I forced myself to run this trail race, as preparation for the 2019 Brazos Bend 50 Miler, as planned..  Starting in the middle of the pack and getting back up on the single track trail regulated my pace during the first 5 miles.  On the second loop, I ran a little faster.  I only came close to tripping once or twice!  I finished in 1:42:00 (10:17 pace).

2019 Ragnar Sunset Washington DC

This was my first time captaining a Ragnar relay team and it was a little stressful!  The temperature was around 88 degrees for my first run but otherwise, it was uneventful.  For my second run, I “doubled up” and started with Runner Three so our team could finish before the 7pm cut-off.  Unfortunately, we still received an unofficial result, which was disappointing.  The National Harbor was a great venue but the race itself was unfulfilling because the organizers didn’t give many teams enough time to finish.

2019 New York City Marathon – Week 9

Sunday’s double in 80 degree heat almost turned into a medical emergency.  On Thursday, I just couldn’t will myself to run in the heat again and my weekly mileage suffered for it.  Generally, I find myself trying to reconcile two very different training adaptations – running 26 miles fast and completing 50 miles slow.

2019 New York City Marathon – Week 8

This week was supposed to start the race preparation cycle of my training, but I was down and out with a cold for three days! Fall officially arrived on Sunday but the temperatures in the Washington, DC region were still breaking records.

2019 New York City Marathon – Week 7

It was a bit of a recovery week before I started the race preparation phase of my 2019 New York City Marathon training cycle.  And, I moved a few workouts around so I would have two easy days before the 2019 Ragnar Sunset Washington DC.

2019 New York City Marathon – Week 6

Running 28 miles over the weekend left me exhausted by Monday night and I slept for 9 hours! My weekday runs were good, but not great, which was confirmation that my body needed recovery.  But, I finished my 20 mile long run on Saturday feeling marathon-ready!
