Sunday’s double in 80 degree heat almost turned into a medical emergency.  On Thursday, I just couldn’t will myself to run in the heat again and my weekly mileage suffered for it.  Generally, I find myself trying to reconcile two very different training adaptations – running 26 miles fast and completing 50 miles slow.

This week was supposed to start the race preparation cycle of my training, but I was down and out with a cold for three days! Fall officially arrived on Sunday but the temperatures in the Washington, DC region were still breaking records.

Running 28 miles over the weekend left me exhausted by Monday night and I slept for 9 hours! My weekday runs were good, but not great, which was confirmation that my body needed recovery.  But, I finished my 20 mile long run on Saturday feeling marathon-ready!

It was Labor Day on Monday and I could have moved my workouts around a bit to take advantage of the extra time but I still took the day off. My sleep was terrible this week as I adjusted back to East Coast time. I ended the week with a relatively fast long run, though!

Two weeks into my 2019 New York City Marathon training cycle and I traveled for work.  I arrived in Athens, Greece on Thursday and even though I was jet-lagged, completed a treadmill run in that night.  Out on the roads the next day, I was rewarded with two amazing sights!

My 2019 New York City Marathon Training Plan

In May, I finished the 2019 Cleveland Marathon in 3:56:40 (9:02 pace).  It was a brutally hot day and only a few weeks after I completed the 2019 Boston Marathon, so I decided to run easy for a few weeks.  In contemplating a fall marathon plan, I wasn’t going to make the 2019 New York City Marathon my goal because I would be taking a long work trip at the end of August.  But after a week of doing a lot of miles on the treadmill and realizing my last race was almost two months ago, I suddenly felt as though the break had gone long enough.
