June 2016 Running – Week 2
It was a good training week even though I didn’t get much sleep. I flew to San Diego for a friend’s wedding on Friday. I only had two workouts – a tempo run on Wednesday and a half marathon/long run on Saturday. My competitive spirit got the best of me and I ran the half marathon all out.
Training Schedule
June 12th – June 18th
Sunday: Rest.
Monday: 6 miles recovery.
Tuesday: 5 miles recovery.
Wednesday: Tempo Run. 6 x 1 mile @ half marathon to 10K pace.
Thursday: 6 miles recovery.
Friday: 5 miles recovery.
Saturday: Wild Horse Trail Half Marathon
Mileage Total: ~45 Miles
Adaptations. I went slightly longer on some of the runs this week but there were only two changes I made to my coach’s workouts. On Friday morning, I was pressed for time getting to the airport, so I did slightly less than 5 miles. But, the biggest change of plan was running Saturday morning’s half marathon all out instead of at long run pace.
Workout Details
Tempo Run. 6 x 1 mile @ half marathon to 10K pace [Log Details].
I felt good during the warmup and had high hopes for the workout. The first mile was very strong. I tried to stay at the upper range of where I set my Garmin – 7:15 to 7:50 pace. I didn’t read my coach’s training notes closely and wasn’t sure if the workout had recovery jogs or rests. During the first recovery, I slowed down and checked my phone. It said “rests” so I walked during the off segments. Whoo hoo!
The second, third, and fourth mile felt good. I thought this workout was going to be a cake walk. But, I had to work a little during the fifth mile – not a lot, but enough to know I wasn’t going to get close to 10K pace for the last mile. I tried to run the sixth mile in the 7:20s but just couldn’t get there. Still, I felt like it was a good workout.
Split paces=7:49, 7:52, 7:42, 7:37, 7:32, 7:35. Average=7:42.
Wild Horse Trail Half Marathon. 13.1 miles @ half marathon pace. [Log Details].
I’ll post a complete race report in a couple of days. I was supposed to run it at long run pace but ran it pretty much all out instead. My time was ~1:48:02. I won my age group and officially will be either 4th or 5th woman overall.
Health
Sleep. I’ve been struggling with a bit of insomnia. I’ve been waking up in the middle of the night at around 2:30/3am and am not falling back asleep until 4am. There were only a couple of night’s this week when I got more than 6 hours of sleep TOTAL. All of my sleep these days is broken. I know this can’t continue if I intend to train hard for the New York City Marathon.
Weather
The weather has been pretty mild for June. On Wednesday’s tempo workout, the humidity made a return appearance but the temperature was still mild in the upper 60s. Saturday’s race was a bit of a scorcher – 70 degrees and no shade. I already started to dread training for a marathon in the summer.
Racing Schedule
Next race: Firecracker 5K on July 4th. (My Complete Racing Schedule.)
The Week Ahead
I travel back home on Monday and am expecting some jetlag. It’ll be my last non-training training week since I’ve told myself I’ll mentally consider myself training for the New York City Marathon next Sunday.
