My Winter 2020 Training Plan

Over the summer, I worked the half marathon plan in Daniel’s Running Formula so I could develop some speed. Then, I I took August off and started a 12-week training cycle in September with a focus on running long again. One of my goals was to run a 15-miler by the end of the cycle and I achieved that in October. Along the way, I averaged about 50-60 miles per week. I ended the training cycle in November by running the 2020 Alexandria Virtual Turkey Trot downtown around the Tidal Basin and Hains Point.

Fall of 2020 – Week 5

After five weeks of hard training, this was a cut-back week. I dropped my mileage from the week before by 30% but kept up the intensity. Summer of 2020 – Week 10

It turned into a bit of an easy week because the speed and threshold workouts weren’t particularly difficult. I also felt a great sense of relief when the London Marathon announced the 2021 race would be canceled. Back in April, I was in no shape to run in a “championship”. Instead of dragging my broken body across a finish line, I’ll have the chance to compete next year.

2020 Runners Run Marathon

I was having a rough training cycle, so when both the Boston Marathon and London Marathon were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was disappointed but also slightly relieved that I wouldn’t have two struggle-fests this spring.  But, I knew I would “run anyway” as I did after the 2012 New York City Marathon was canceled.
